You bend

I found Annabelle's ken doll in the toilet like this.

Happenstantial art or feminist art piece?

On reflection I realised that it can be both, and that what it can be is defined by my action.

If I had just left the Ken doll as found, submerged, absurd, emasculated by plumbing then it would have remained happenstantial art. Like an accidental readymade, echoing Duchamp.

But I chose to photograph it. And if I went to frame it even more intentionally, contextualizing it in a feminist exhibition for example, then it would become feminist art commentary.

I know that sounds quite simple, but it feels powerful and profound.

It reminds me of a poster I see often in one of my tutors rooms which quotes the photographer Ansel Adams: "You don't take a photograph, you make it".
